The Rietveld Building (1973): Light, Space & Modernism

In 1963, the Dutch government commissioned Gerrit Rietveld—one of the foundational architects of De Stijl and designer of the UNESCO-listed Rietveld Schröder House—to create a permanent home for the Van Gogh collection. Although Rietveld passed away in 1964, his associates Joan van Dillen and J. van Tricht faithfully brought his vision to completion. The museum officially opened its doors on June 2, 1973.

Key Architectural Features of the Rietveld Building:

• The Central Skylight Atrium: Rietveld organized the museum around a monumental rectangular void rising through all four floors. Overhead skylights flood the core with clear northern light, creating an airy, unhurried atmosphere.
• Geometric Clarity & Human Scale: Built with clean cubist volumes, concrete framework, and expansive glazing, the building avoids grand imperial monumentality in favor of accessible, open geometry where visitors feel directly connected to the art.
• Chronological Flow: The four-story gallery arrangement allows visitors to walk naturally in an upward spiral, mirroring Vincent’s artistic growth from earthy peasant sketches to luminous Mediterranean canvases.

The Kurokawa Wing (1999): The Philosophy of Symbiosis

By the 1990s, the museum’s global renown demanded dedicated spaces for world-class temporary loan exhibitions. Financed by a generous gift from The Japan Foundation and Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance, world-renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa designed the exhibition wing, which opened in June 1999.

Kurokawa—a founding theorist of the radical Japanese Metabolism movement—structured the wing around his philosophy of Symbiosis (the harmonious coexistence of contrasting cultures, materials, and forms):

• Asymmetrical Ellipse: In stark contrast to Rietveld’s strict cubic grid, Kurokawa designed an asymmetrical, curved pavilion half-submerged into the grounds of Museumplein.
• Contrasting Materials: The exterior combines fine-grained gray sedimentary stone from Brittany, curved titanium cladding, and smooth dark granite, establishing a tactile dialogue with the surrounding grass lawns.
• Japanese Water Element: The wing was originally framed by a sunken reflecting pool with tranquil stepping stones, symbolizing spiritual transition and echoing Vincent’s deep reverence for Japanese art (Japonaiserie).

The Glass Entrance Hall (2015): State-of-the-Art Engineering

In September 2015, the museum unveiled its newest architectural feat: a breathtaking curved glass entrance pavilion rising directly from the lawns of Museumplein.

• Transparent Structural Glass: Designed by Kurokawa Architect & Associates and finalized by Hans van Heeswijk Architecten, the hall is constructed entirely from structural glass fins and cold-bent double-glazed panels, requiring no heavy steel pillars.
• Subterranean Foyer: Visitors descend an illuminated glass staircase or circular glass elevator into a vast 800 m² underground welcome atrium.
• Seamless Transit: This subterranean hub connects the Rietveld building, Kurokawa wing, cloakrooms, bookshop, and auditorium seamlessly beneath ground level.
